Its large size means that it has the ability to heat large outdoor spaces, which is essential for a Christmas, New Year’s or Valentine’s Eve party.
Fire Pit and/or Fire Table
If your backyard is on the smaller size, then a fire pit or fire table might be just the right option – and you can use these all year long. Because they are available in so many shapes, sizes and heights, an American Fyre Designs fire pit or fire table fits perfectly in any outdoor living room.
With either style, you can use the edges of the top for placing drinks and plates, which makes them very handy, especially during parties.
Fire Urn, Fire Bowl or Firefall
For a truly dramatic effect in your backyard oasis, add several unique fire features, such as a fire urn, fire bowl, or firefall (which is similar to a waterfall). These gorgeous pieces help light pathways and corners while also providing warmth. They look great in any size backyard or patio. These are the American Fyre Designs fire features that add a very dramatic element to your outdoor living room. Think of them as the accessories that finish off your outdoor décor.

The Place We Live
It’s hard to beat the beautiful views, lovely weather, delicious food and gracious people in this great city of San Diego. We are very thankful that the moderate climate allows us to enjoy as much time outdoors as possible – especially in our own backyard.
The People We Serve
Hauser’s Patio & Rattan is a family-owned business and we strive to treat each person who walks through the front door or contacts us via our website as members of our extended family. As part of our family – and friends – you are the most important people in our lives. Thank you!
In our luxury backyard – just as yours – we are grateful for the outdoor furniture and accessories we have to make life more comfortable and enjoyable. And because it is nestled within a majestic landscape, our backyard oasis is even more appealing and the place we most want to spend time. Our selection of outdoor artwork adds additional beauty.
Our Needs Perfectly Met
Another thing for which we are very thankful is that all our needs are perfectly met: we have plenty of food, a comfortable place to live and the accoutrements to make each season exceedingly pleasant. We’re talking about a pool to cool off in the summertime and a grand outdoor fireplace to keep us toasty throughout the winter, among others.
The Ability to Give Back
Because we have been so richly blessed, we are happy to give back to our community. We give thanks that we are able to help those in need through various charities, particularly here in the San Diego area.
Soft and Cozy Things
Who doesn’t enjoy being coddled and cuddled in warmth and plush comfort? We’re talking big toss pillows on every outdoor sofa and chair, fire urns and fire tables to gather around, outdoor rugs to keep our toes warm and plenty of soft blankets to stave off the coastal chill.
Truly, if not for our business, we would not have so many friends and the opportunity to help others create their own beautiful backyard oasis – and even offer assistance with products bought from other companies. We are so thankful that we have invested ourselves, our time and our efforts into this business that we love.
Lastly, we can’t forget about the many joyful San Diego Thanksgiving gatherings we have hosted in our gorgeous and comfortable home, especially our outdoor entertaining space. Friends and family have gathered with us over the years to create unforgettable memories. That is truly something for which to be thankful.
From all of us to all of you, Happy San Diego Thanksgiving and many blessings to you and yours!
The forecast for San Diego – as always! – is calling for lovely weather over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Why not take advantage of it and host your dinner outdoors? At Hauser’s Patio & Rattan, we’ve got all your al fresco dining needs covered. Start with seasonal décor – pots of fresh herbs, pumpkins and mums are de rigeur – and then peruse these tips to make this year’s outdoor Thanksgiving a celebration to remember.
Add Extra Seating
One thing you can never have enough of is seating for everyone in your party. Do you have more guests coming than chairs? If a new outdoor dining set is not in your plans, there are other options.
Consider creating intimate groupings throughout the expanse of your backyard oasis. In addition to three or four chairs or barstools, be sure to include enough table space to comfortably accommodate multiple plates, glasses and things such as salt and pepper shakers. A small vase of flowers or even branches with attached leaves make a simple but lovely centerpiece.
Sofas work, as well, to provide seating for all your dinner guests. Coffee tables and occasional tables stand in as the dining table, so make sure they are plentiful and strategically placed.
Pro tip: have a stack of blankets at the ready near seating arrangements so guests can stay warm and cozy.
Include a Bar
Next to the magnificent meal, your guests are sure to want a variety of beverages. A bar cart makes it easy to provide all the drinks, ice, glasses and accompaniments everyone wants. There is no need to limit the bar cart to alcoholic drinks; it can easily be used as a coffee or hot chocolate bar, too. Because it is mobile, you can easily wheel it through the pathways in your backyard and around the seating arrangements.
For a more permanent solution, opt for a bar that is meant to stay in place. These larger pieces are the ideal addition to bigger parties, since they hold more.
Pro tip: use fall-colored glasses for this special occasion and include swizzle sticks and/or straws tied with raffia. Tie garnishes in with the Thanksgiving theme, such as a cinnamon and sugar dip for tumbler rims, maple leaf-shaped sugar cubes and apple slices in places of limes.
Of course, Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same without watching the big game. If you don’t already have one, consider setting up an area, under cover, for a large screen TV plus lots of comfy seating. Outdoor sofas and coffee tables are a good choice. Swivel rockers and recliners provide the ultimate in relaxing seating. Add an outdoor rug for a hint of cozy. Infrared heaters placed overhead along the edge of rafters help keep everyone warm when the sun goes down and temperatures dip. Fire bowls, fire urns and fire tables are another great source of heat where you need it and they can be easily moved as the party moves.
Pro tip: make sure you accommodate friends and family members who do not wish to watch the game, too, by giving them a quieter space to congregate – perhaps a screened porch?
An outdoor Thanksgiving is a wonderful way to celebrate what we are most thankful for: our favorite people (our customers!) and the beautiful weather we enjoy here in Southern California.
As we eagerly anticipate gathering with friends and family for Thanksgiving and beyond, it may also be time to reconsider the safety and comfort of your luxury outdoor space. Yes, tis the season for outdoor warmth and light, and the right products can help you bring it all together in style.
Let There Be Light
Pathways are one area of your backyard oasis where it is very important to have adequate lighting. But rather than opt for big, obtrusive lamps, choose low pathway markers. Hurricanes and other candle holders are the perfect setting for LED candles, which create a nice ambience while being the safe choice.
Another unusual option is adding outdoor artwork with subtle LED details. Pieces of outdoor artwork look great not only on garden or courtyard walls, they add a festive touch to a fireplace, pillar or lattice (just be sure to securely attach them).
For even more romantic mood lighting, think about string lights. These economical and versatile lights can be strung across the “ceiling” of your outdoor living room or hang vertically from the rafters of your porch. They make a nifty accent for plants and even a lovely outdoor dining table centerpiece. Along with a string of lights flowing down the middle of the table, add LED votives to make it easier to dine al fresco.
Finally, luminarias are a perennial favorite in Southern California. You can go old school and fill paper bags with sand and candles (LED is the safest choice) or opt for the no-fuss choice of luminarias manufactured from durable materials in a variety of styles.
Let There Be Heat
With temperatures dipping down into autumn lows, it’s important to have a good, working source of heat for outdoor galas. The best option is an outdoor gas fireplace. If you don’t already have one installed in your luxury outdoor room, now is the time to get one on order.
Or, if you have an older model that isn’t functioning reliably, you may want to consider replacing the elements. A new burner can help your outdoor fireplace produce heat more efficiently and a new set of realistic fireplace logs can really spruce up its looks. You may even want to go with a new hearth or switch from propane to gas, along with adding a remote control for ultimate ease in starting a toasty fire.
Fire urns, fire bowls and fire pedestals scattered throughout your luxury outdoor living space are another way to outdoor warmth and light. They make a bold design statement while serving a very useful purpose.
Let There Be Holiday Decor
In order to really get into the spirit of the holiday season, add some subtle decorations to your backyard oasis. We always advocate for the simple rather than overdone. This is easier on you and easier on the eyes, as well.
Some of our favorite holiday touches include adding new toss pillows in festive colors, stringing evergreen boughs throughout seating areas and incorporating classic glass hurricanes filled with cranberries or pine cones. A few sturdy ornaments on outdoor trees along with subtle string lighting complete your outdoor holiday décor.
Bring on the Outdoor Warmth and Light
The holiday season is officially in swing and it’s time to celebrate with outdoor warmth and light and special décor. Let us help you craft the perfect backyard oasis for your holiday entertaining.
Not only is the weather gorgeous, but the holiday season is right around the corner – and these two factors make it the perfect time to start planning your next al fresco party. Let us help with these tips for holiday outdoor entertaining made easy.
Style a Bar Cart
Every great party starts with beverages – adult or not. One trend that we really love is having a signature drink at your party – something that is tasty and prepared in advance so you have more time to spend with guests. There are plenty of great ideas for a signature drink recipe on Pinterest and other sites; there are sure to be several that are a good match for your holiday outdoor entertaining occasion.
But don’t forget the rest of your guests, who may not want to stray from their favorite beverage. It’s always a good idea to have a fully stocked bar cart available on the back patio. Start with a stylish, mobile cart and have at least one bottle of each clear liquor, plus a good scotch and soda plus tonic water for mixers. A classic cocktail shaker is de rigeur, as are jars of olives, bowls of limes and other condiments. Be sure to provide plenty of cut crystal glasses in various sizes and colorful swizzle sticks for a bit of extra panache.
Gather Round the Fireplace
As the evening progresses, be sure that your guests stay comfortable in regard to temperature. A large, outdoor gas fireplace is the ideal way to provide warmth throughout the space in your backyard oasis. A gas fireplace is a better choice than a wood-burning model because it is clean, efficient and the blower fan really puts out the heat when you need it. Plus, it is super simple to flick a switch and get the heat going in an instant.
For easy holiday outdoor entertaining, be sure to gather lots of seating pieces around the fireplace, along with scattered occasional tables for drinks and plates. In front of the fireplace is sure to be the place where everyone gravitates, so have additional chairs at the ready. Pub height tables and bar stools take up less space than a dining set while allowing those who wish to mingle a place to put their drinks as they weave in and out of the crowd.
Keep it Light
For the safety of your guests, make sure you have adequate lighting in the backyard for holiday outdoor entertaining. This is particularly important along pathways that lead to and from the house and the driveway/garage. Not only will proper outdoor illumination keep your guests safe, it will prevent them from accidentally trampling your landscaping plants.
While low, solar pathway markers are a perennial favorite for outdoor lighting, don’t forget about adding light to the various seating arrangements throughout your backyard oasis. An umbrella light is a good way to illuminate table settings. Outdoor lamps can be placed on occasional tables and pub height tables for subtle, yet effective, lighting.
Holiday outdoor entertaining needn’t be a scary proposition. Take the time to plan in advance so you have all the proper accessories, décor items and seating plus dining arrangements in place so you can rest easy knowing your next party is sure to be a hit.
Fall is here and winter is well on its way, even here in beautiful Southern California. With chilly nights in the forecast, it’s time to think about how to keep you and your guests warm in your luxury outdoor living space. We’d like to give you another option beyond fireplaces and fire pits – outdoor heaters. These versatile heaters go nearly anywhere while offering lots of toasty warmth. Here’s what you need to know about options for adding outdoor heaters to your backyard oasis.
Hanging or Standing Outdoor Heaters?
Generally, there are two options for outdoor heaters that warm your backyard oasis: hanging or standing.
Freestanding patio heaters run on propane or natural gas and can be used throughout your backyard living area, as long as the area is properly ventilated. They are easily portable, so you can move them right along with the party. A single freestanding outdoor heater warms about 115 square feet of space, so this gives you a good idea of how many you need to incorporate in your backyard to provide sufficient heat to all the places you and your guests relax. There are also models which can be permanently mounted in the ground.
Hanging outdoor heaters are securely affixed to a wall or ceiling. They hide neatly behind facades or tucked up underneath eaves. These outdoor heaters usually run on the normal electrical circuits which run to the outside of your home. They are good at warming an area of about nine square feet (depending on BTUs), so you will need several of them if your goal is to heat a large area. If you are using hanging outdoor heaters in your outdoor dining area, it will require at least two to provide sufficient heat.
Electric or Propane?
One thing you will need to think about is the power source of your outdoor heaters. If you already have natural gas running to your home, freestanding or hanging models that run on gas would be the natural choice.
Usually, freestanding units run on propane cylinders that are hidden in the bottom of the heater. They do take up additional space on your patio and require the tanks to be refilled, so those are two considerations when deciding which style of outdoor heater to install.
Hanging heat lamps are generally preferred to be electric, since this allows them to install flush with a ceiling. This provides the neatest appearance and also makes these outdoor heaters a very reliable source of heat.
Warm Up to the Outdoors
No matter how large your backyard oasis or how spread out the space, there are several options to keep it warm with outdoor heaters. Choose between freestanding units that are portable or hanging models that stay neatly out of sight.
If you have not been shopping recently for fire features to add to your backyard oasis, you may be surprised at all the new and exciting forms available. Between fire tables, fire falls, fire urns and fire columns, there are plenty of ways to add pizzazz and warmth to a luxury outdoor living room. Take a look at these ideas and turn your backyard into a showcase of warm fire elements this fall.
If you are lucky enough to have a backyard that includes access to the beach, don’t forget that this is also part of your backyard living room. As such, it deserves to be kept warm via a simple flip of the switch that ignites the gas burners in a fire pit or fire table. Make sure you have a stable floor, such as a concrete pad, in place on which to set the fire feature, then surround it with native rocks. Use mesmerizing fire glass media instead of logs for a look that echoes ocean waves. Add low, Adirondack chairs and pieces of driftwood that enhance the natural surroundings. This type of fire features works best with propane gas, so you can locate it farther from your house. Don’t forget to place stepping stones with low, pathway lighting between the two locations for safety.
Long and Narrow
If your backyard oasis includes a patio that runs the length of your home, consider fire features that echo that design and take full advantage of the available space. A long sofa placed against the outdoor wall that overlooks the view is a great place to start. Flank the sofa with a pair of armchairs. Place a long and low fire table with a rugged, stone or concrete foundation in front of the sofa for heat that spans the distance. May we suggest fire rocks as the media for the flames? This looks exceptionally well against the backdrop of an ocean or even forested view. Add a clear glass surround if wind is a problem in your backyard oasis.
Makes Things Entertaining
For a luxury outdoor living room meant for entertaining, small groupings are the idea vehicle for hosting lots of friends and family members. Instead of asking them all to huddle around one central outdoor fireplace, consider using small fire features scattered throughout the space. Fire urns are the ideal vehicle for this application. Their small size allows them to move easily among seating arrangements while keeping things warm and cozy. Add a pedestal to make a fire urn the proper height for barstools. Make sure you include enough of the fire urns to add a bit of cozy warmth to every place your guests might perch throughout the party.
Fire bowls are another option for adding several sources of warmth throughout your backyard oasis. These bowls can stay low, on the ground, or be placed atop an outdoor table. There are several widths available, depending on the size of the area you wish to heat. Try using a pair to flank your front door, for a cozy effect that also lights the entry.
With all these exciting new ways to add warmth to your luxury outdoor living areas, why stick with tried-and-true fire features?
Just like any other room in your home, an outdoor living room requires certain essentials to make it ultra-comfortable: deeply cushioned seating, lots of tables scattered throughout, proper lighting for day and night and a way to control the temperature. For many of us, temperature control in the fall and winter months comes from adding an outdoor fireplace. Check out these ideas for making cozy seating and dining arrangements around the gas fireplace in your backyard living room.
Move the Chairs
The first order of business is to ensure that you and your guests can easily enjoy the heat from your outdoor fireplace. You don’t necessarily have to purchase new chairs and sofas; oftentimes it works just as well to move the pieces you currently own closer to the flames.
Take the patio chairs and group them so that they face the hearth of your outdoor fireplace, then add an occasional table on either side. You could do the same thing with a porch swing, dining room chairs or benches that overlook the view from your backyard. Sometimes, just adding fluffy, new pillows in fall colors for extra comfort is all that is needed to transform your existing seating pieces into perfect hearthside perches.
Create and Decorate a New Outdoor “Room”
If you have been hanging out around the pool all summer long, now is the time to move away from the water and toward the heat of an outdoor fireplace. Establish a new and separate outdoor living area by adding furnishings and décor around the hearth.
Think of the space several feet to the left, right and front of the fireplace as the “walls” of the room. Two sofas placed perpendicular to the fireplace is a great start. For additional warmth and comfort, add a fire table that is low, like a coffee table, and includes a wide border of tiles for setting drinks and plates. Sofa tables behind the seating provide a nice platform for winter-friendly plants and stacks of magazines. You may also want to hang an outdoor television set above the gas fireplace, for additional entertainment. Finally, a thick rug to cover up cold tiles keeps your feet warm as you walk to and from your new outdoor living room.
Bring on the Food
Here is another idea for bringing you and your guests closer to the outdoor fireplace. Add an outdoor kitchen countertop with sink and built-in grill to the area placed horizontally in front of the hearth. This creates a visual divider that doesn’t interfere with the warmth of the gas flames. Place a long dining table and chairs on the other side of the counter, anchored by an oblong patio rug. This allows you to comfortably dine al fresco while still enjoying the sight of the dancing flames and the crackling heat from the realistic, hand-crafted logs.
With cooler temperatures approaching, it’s the perfect time to rearrange the furnishings in your backyard oasis to take advantage of the warmth from an outdoor fireplace.
With the change of seasons, there are certain things you should pay attention to in your outdoor living room. Although here in Southern California we don’t experience the big weather and temperature shifts much of the rest of the country does, there are still some fall updates that you should attend to in order to preserve the integrity of your yard and outdoor furnishings.
With our moderate climate, your garden is still viable. In fact, fall is the perfect time of year to incorporate native California plants, such as Rabbit Brush, California Aster, Seaside Daisy, Cape Sebastian, White Chaparral Currant and many more. Native flora particularly likes the cooler temps and increased moisture of autumn to firmly establish their root systems.
Fall is also the ideal time to plant bulbs such as amaryllis, tulips, daffodils and freesias. Cold soil now is what bulbs need to emerge as beautiful flowers in the spring. Before planting, add mulch and blood and bone meal to the bed for fertilization.
Don’t give up on mowing your lawn just yet. Keep watering it and add fresh grass seed to brown or bare patches. Next, sprinkle with slow-release fertilizer or organic compost or mulch to provide needed nutrients. The moister weather allows new grass seed to germinate while fertilizer strengthens the grass to withstand cooler temperatures. To ensure that sun and fertilizer reach the seeds and grass, rake up leaves and debris and dethatch the lawn. The fall is also a great time to apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent spring weeds.
Light the Way
With shorter days, you will need to ensure your backyard oasis has enough lighting to make it usable. Although an outdoor fireplace helps provide illumination via entrancing flames, consider adding pathway lights to prevent tripping and falling. Light fixtures with shielded bulbs aimed low along the pathway are best for safety. Solar lights, although environmentally friendly and easy to maintain, are not good light producers. Consider adding an umbrella light to the underside of your outdoor table umbrella for subtle illumination when you are dining al fresco.
Care for Feathered Friends
With the onset of cooler temperatures, birds begin migrating south to Mexico for the winter. This is a fabulous time to watch for warblers, thrushes, sparrows and orioles. Ensure your feathered friends have a good source of drinking water, either in a birdbath or in pot saucers placed throughout your backyard. Be sure to change the water daily so it does not develop algae. Provide suet or seed for birds such as the white-crowned sparrow that winter over in Southern California.
There are a few additional fall updates to take care of. Consider trading out the breezy hues of summer pillows and upholstery cushions with the warm colors of autumn. Clean them with a good brushing or a swipe of a damp towel before stowing them away until next year. As temperatures cool, it may be time to take down umbrellas and shade features. Be sure that any furnishings that might be ruined by rain water are secured. Replace pots of summer blooms with colorful fall plants.
Whatever fall updates you do to prepare your backyard oasis for autumn in San Diego, don’t forget to have seasonal fun. Attend a harvest festival, pick pumpkins, go tide pooling – whatever it is you enjoy doing, make the time to do it!
When it comes to furnishing your luxury outdoor living room to make it easy to use in any season and any time of the day or night, how often do you think about lighting? The right light in the right place can mean the difference between fully enjoying the space and not having enough illumination to do what you want, when you want to. Let’s take a look at some of the spaces in your backyard oasis that could benefit from a lovely outdoor lamp made specifically to withstand the elements.
One of our favorite ways to enjoy our backyard living area is using it as a reading room. Whether a physical book or electronic one, it’s just so relaxing to curl up on a spacious lounge chair tucked into a dozy corner with a cold beverage and dive into a good read. When daylight starts to wane, there’s no need to go inside. Simply add an outdoor lamp to a chairside occasional table or flat-topped ottoman. This way, you can enjoy reading day or night.
Take a look at this gorgeously styled lamp with its coastal, beach vibe. Its transitional style is perfect for a gorgeous Southern California patio or porch. The finish is a distressed grey coral while the neutral lampshade is composed of crisp linen. Its large size (40” high with a width of 30”) makes it the ideal lamp for casting a lot of light by which to read.
Flanking the Fireplace
Although an outdoor fireplace puts out a lot of warmth and light, it doesn’t illuminate much beyond a few feet in front of the hearth. In order to light a pathway or a seating arrangement around the fireplace, consider adding a pair of flanking floor lamps.
May we suggest a floor lamp such as this San Rafael model? Its classic California Mission style works beautifully in any outdoor environment with views of rolling hills, lots of floral plantings and a focus on the wide expanse of blue sky. The open metalwork of the lamp’s body is finished in a popular oiled bronze color and features a milk-glass cylinder for extra visual appeal. This lamp can be used either indoors or out.
The Dining Table
Although it’s often considered romantic to dine al fresco in muted light, it can make things hard for a diner to distinguish between dishes. A lovely solution is to add table lamps to the dining table.
We recommend going with an outdoor lamp that features a slender base, so to not take up too much real estate on the table. An excellent choice would be the Kanamota Outdoor Table Lamp, which is uniquely crafted to resemble petrified wood. It has a slight mineralized sheen to it that makes the vibe less rustic and more modern. The weather-resistant, Moonlight Silver shade enhances the metallic quality of the base. All of its components are powder-coated to better withstand the elements.
Inside/Outside the Cabana
Finally, an outdoor cabana is such a soothing, comfortable area to lounge that it requires a light fixture of its own. This Elliot Bay Outdoor Table Lamp is an ideal addition. It uses either standard bulbs or LED bulbs and features crisp, contemporary lines with a slightly rustic finish that easily fits right in with nearly any design style.
When furnishing your backyard oasis, don’t forget about the perfect lighting, via outdoor table lamp, for each area.
We often remind our customers that they should treat their backyard oasis similar to a room in their home in regard to decorations, furnishings and outdoor accessories. After all, this space is another living area – one that you might use more often than indoor rooms – so it should be as comfortable and fully equipped as possible. One way to ensure that it is beautifully furnished is to add outdoor artwork to the walls.
Outdoor Artwork? Yes, Please!
We’d hazard to guess that most San Diego homeowners never give a thought to decorating outdoor walls. And if they do, it’s probably with the idea that the artwork must be crafted from metal and protected from the wind, rain, sun and sea salt.
That’s why we are happy to introduce you to a line of outdoor artwork that is meant to withstand the elements. These pieces of art for the walls of your patio, gazebo, porch or cabana are UV resistant, waterproof and printed with archival quality inks. High quality photography suitable to be reproduced in large format is made into gicleé prints with resists erosion and fading.
Each print comes with a hardware kit that allows you to install it on any type of wall, such as concrete, stucco, wood, brick or even aluminum. The installation hooks and stainless steel-reinforced framework ensure that your artwork will stay in place, even in winds up to 60 mph. This high quality outdoor artwork is covered by a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.
Choices, Choices, Choices
Perhaps the hardest part of adding outdoor artwork to your backyard oasis is selecting from the hundreds of prints available.
There are plenty of choices for gorgeous prints that echo our Southern California beach vibe – sailboats, ocean scenes, sandy vignettes, piers, wharves, palm trees and tides. For a dramatic effect, choose an expansive triptych that can easily decorate an entire wall.
Then again, you may want to go with a completely different subject matter. There are plenty of pieces that are photographs and prints of foreign locales. If beautiful florals are more your style, you have lots to choose from. Rustic country chic that is all the rage right now is nicely represented, as well, with scenes involving old trucks, wooden crates and vintage signs. From animals to landscapes to city scenes and those with LED lights, you can find nearly any subject of interest in our large selection of outdoor artwork.
If you are passionate about decorating for the holidays, you will find lots of choices for Christmas scenes. Each style is also available with lights.
Adding artwork to the walls of your outdoor living space adds that special touch to take it from just another backyard, to an al fresco room that is warm, inviting and fully decorated.
We hope you have enjoyed our blog series this month regarding all the fantastic attractions around the San Diego area. But at the end of the day, your home is where you will stay. It just makes sense to pay the most attention to the comforts, conveniences and amenities in your own backyard oasis, since you spend the majority of time there. In case you have not been shopping for outdoor furnishings and accessories lately, here are several suggestions to make your time at home even more enjoyable.
Build a Better California Room
Ah, the California room. It’s the go-between living area that allows you to enjoy your outdoor landscape and ocean views while maintaining a temperate environment. As such, many San Diego homeowners are often unsure how to furnish and accessorize this space. We firmly believe that if it is a living area, it should include all the comforts you would find in any other room of the home.
Of course, comfortable seating is de rigeur. Outdoor furnishings, including a sofa with plump cushions are always welcome. You may want to include a couple of swivel rocker lounge chairs, as well, which are easy to move out of the sun. Then again, you can’t go wrong with a pair or more of classic Adirondack chairs. Add a serving cart to make enjoying a cocktail in this room a bit easier. These handy little pieces are available in a wide variety of styles to suit your current décor.
Because your California room is protected from insects, it’s also the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee or an evening meal. Think about including a bar height table and stools, or a full dining set, with ambient lighting. Include a lazy Susan in the middle for ease of serving food and drinks. Comfort Through the Seasons
When you have spent a lot of time and effort turning your backyard into a verdant oasis, you should be able to enjoy it year round. That means adding outdoor furnishings and pieces which ensure your comfort, no matter the outdoor temperature.
In the warmer summer months, one or several shade features will keep you protected from the sun’s rays. Add lights wrapped around the top of the pole and misters along the perimeter for even more comfort. There are even Bluetooth speakers that easily attach to the umbrella’s ribs. Then again a cabana, outfitted with a comfy chaise lounge, portable, battery-operated cooler and occasional table, might be the better choice in your backyard oasis.
As fall transitions to winter, San Diego nights offer crisp coolness. This is when you will want an outdoor fireplace, fire pit, fire urn or fire bowl to keep off the chill. Add a remote control, whenever possible, to make it supremely easy to enjoy radiant heat and mesmerizing flames in seconds.
The Best Relaxation Starts at Home
When you call a little slice of paradise home, you will always enjoy coming back to your own backyard oasis at the end of a day or the end of a trip. Set it up for maximum relaxation and comfort with these outdoor furnishings and more, brought to you by Hauser’s Patio.
Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of living in the San Diego area is that we have access to numerous hiking trails and gorgeous outdoor scenery. While there are plenty of options if you want to step outside and get a bit of exercise, Point Loma is one of our favorites. Here’s why.
About Cabrillo National Monument
As you may know, Cabrillo National Monument is the sole such National Park-designated property in San Diego. It was created to memorialize Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s original West Coast landing back in 1542. This National Monument includes several key features: tide pools, the Point Loma Lighthouse, an information center with gift shop, several hiking trails, guided tours and a majestic statue of the explorer. You can drive into Cabrillo National Monument, then decide which areas you’d like to visit and which trails you’d prefer to hike. It is located just beyond the naval base and Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
What We Love Best About Point Loma
If breathtaking scenery is what you are seeking, it’s hard to beat the hiking trails to Point Loma, which follow a brief portion of the Pacific Ocean coastline. A trip to Point Loma can easily encompass an entire day’s worth of activities, starting with a lovely hike and ending with a trip to the sea caves to explore tide pools. Weekdays are obviously less busy, but if your only chance to visit is on a weekend, arrive as early as possible.
As far as accessing a beach for swimming or sunbathing, Point Loma is not it. Instead, you will find tide pools that reveal their unique collection of near shore creatures at low tide, lit by the golden and russet hues of a San Diego sunset. If large mammals are more your thing, be sure to view the Whale Watch Overlook.
Head for one or all of the walking trails that follow the bluffs on the monument’s west side. That is also where you will find the historic and now defunct Point Loma Lighthouse, a well-preserved 1855 building which includes the keeper’s residence. The culmination of the trail ends at the big stone statue dedicated to Cabrillo. Along the way, gorgeous and long-ranging views of Coronado Island, the navy base, San Diego’s skyline and downtown and even old Mexico inspire moments to stop and take in the scope of varied scenery. The Bayside Trail is your best chance for spotting wildlife – an anomaly in a large urban area such as San Diego – and an expansive view of San Diego Bay.
An additional bonus is that if you are a history buff, you can tour an authentic WWII bunker every second and fourth Saturday of the month and a military history exhibit that covers the role played by Point Loma in both World Wars.
Cabrillo National Monument/Point Loma is representative of some of the best places locally to find gorgeous scenery, history, native wildlife and get in a healthy hike or two – and that’s why we count it as one of our personal favorites.
Did you know? San Diego craft breweries number more here than anywhere else in the country. Not only does our city have more craft brewers than any other, they are ranked as some of the best by experts and tasters alike.
Currently there are more than 130 craft breweries here in San Diego County and that number is growing. To put it in perspective, San Diego County is home to a full one-quarter of those in the entire state of California. Here’s another factoid: Those 130 breweries are more than the entire United States had three decades ago.
While it would take quite a while to get through every single one, here is a short list of those with the best ratings. All of them offer tours and/or tastings, so when you are ready to plan for a fun weekend (or 52), try starting with these San Diego craft breweries.
Mike Hess Brewing
This brewery is the thirty-third to open in San Diego. The operation now includes two locations, in Miramar and North Park, where the brewery produces its craft beers and offers tours and tastings. Craft beers from Mike Hess are considered some of the most unique in the area.
- 7955 Silverton Ave, #1201, San Diego
AleSmith Brewing Company
This brewery was actually founded 22-years ago by a home brewer who found his passion and honed his skill in order to garner hundreds of medals. AleSmith is known for its high alcohol-by-volume beers, IPAs and barrel-aged brews. Their tasting room features draft ales not available anywhere else.
- 9368 Cabot Drive, San Diego
Monkey Paw Pub & Brewery
Although the location (a former dive bar) may be a bit beyond your comfort zone, this small craft brewery is worth a taste. Best known for their Oatmeal Pale Ale, Creamsicle and Sweet Georgia Brown brews, these beers are crafted by passionate brewers whose only care is the taste. Monkey Paw has been referred to as “earnest and authentic.”
- 805 16th Street, San Diego
This brewery is known for its nicely appointed tasting room and beer garden, with 30 taps serving its most popular brews, plus seasonal and specialty ales. You can take a half hour tour of the brewery, which includes a tasting of four beers. What’s special about this company’s brewmaster is that he had the foresight to trademark the term “West Coast IPA.”
- 6550 Mira Mesa Blvd., San Diego
Port Brewing & The Lost Abbey
This is the place to go for innovative and exciting beers. The brewery includes two brands in a single building. Port is your choice for “California-style” brews while Lost Abbey crafts Belgian and sour ales. There is something to please any beer aficionado between the two.
- 155 Mata Way, Suite 104, San Diego
This brewery is newer than the rest (it opened in 2012), but that doesn’t make their craft beers any less tasty. They are known for their IPAs, stouts and Belgian brews with subtle, yet distinct flavors. Choose which ales you which to taste – The Pupil is a local favorite – in three-ounce pours. What we like best about this one is the outdoor patio.
- 8262 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego
Originally a home brewing supply shop, Ballast Point opened as a craft brewery in 1996. In keeping with their location, all their beers are named with a fish or fishing term theme. This one also includes a full restaurant, as well as hand-crafted spirits like whiskey, rum and vodka. Ballast Point is the second largest of the San Diego craft breweries.
- 9045 Carroll Way, San Diego
Here is another craft brewery with a restaurant onsite. It also includes lots of lovely landscaping (waterfalls and gardens) amidst which you can enjoy their carefully crafted ales, such as the Stone IPA and Smoked Porter. Their taproom includes exclusive, limited selections.
- 1999 Citracado Parkway Escondido
This brewery is both kid-friendly and dog-friendly and food trucks onsite offer plenty of eating options. It’s a laid-back location promoting good vibes and a wide variety of beers in their tasting room. They are best known for their IPAs and lower alcohol brews, in keeping with the family friendly atmosphere. Brewery tours are available.
- 4542 30th St., San Diego
Pacific Beach Alehouse
Here’s yet another one of San Diego craft breweries offering onsite food, as well as handcrafted beer. In fact, their restaurant menu is just as highly rated as their brews. You’ll find their beers are an ingredient in many of the restaurant’s sauces, dressings and desserts.
- 721 Grand Ave., San Diego

There is one outdoor furnishing that needs to be a part of every luxury San Diego outdoor living room: a shade feature. No matter how many deeply cushioned seating pieces or occasional tables and ottomans for comfort you include, this space would not be complete without shaded areas throughout. Yes, you probably already have a covered patio, but why limit your time outdoors to one area? The best way to take advantage of the gorgeous views and beautiful greenery in your backyard is to develop several, small seating areas that invite you and your guests to roam about and enjoy it all. In either case, make sure you provide enough seats for everyone to be comfortable.
In addition to lounging and dining areas, make sure you carve out enough space in your luxury outdoor living room to include plush, deep seating for everyday enjoyment. There are few icons that evoke an image of a beach party better than Tommy Bahama. The famed designer’s outdoor furnishings are perfectly matched to an oceanside gala atmosphere – and one that you can easily create in your own backyard. Here’s how to plan a staycation party with pieces from the Tommy Bahama Outdoor furniture collection.
Get the Party Started
Every good staycation party starts with beverages and hors d’oeuvres. And the best way to make sure you and your guests enjoy a bit to drink and eat is by strategically placing seating areas around your backyard oasis.
As shown in the image above, poolside is a fantastic place to get the party started. Although this Royal Kahala Black Sands grouping from Tommy Bahama Outdoor furniture is meant to be intimate, you could easily add more of these deeply cushioned, comfy chairs around a fire pit table.
For more of a cocktail party feel, consider substituting a bar height table and bar stools. The Royal Kahala Black Sands collection also features a grouping cocktail table, a number of which are perfect for scattering throughout your backyard landscape for a place your guests can set their drinks.
Here’s another idea: provide a bar where your guests can be served the drink of their choice while lounging on comfy bar stools. This Blue Olive bar fits the bill perfectly – and looks right at home in a Mediterranean or contemporary styled outdoor living area. You can play bartender, or hire someone else to do it so you truly feel as if you are on vacation in your own home.
Cozy Seating for Bigger Parties
Another seating option is a sofa or sectional. This Ocean Club Pacifica sectional from the Tommy Bahama Outdoor furniture collection does the job of seating several people in comfort beautifully. Once again, the poolside setting is ideal for creating a calm, resort-like atmosphere and the fire pit adds another layer of mesmerizing scenery.
A more traditional outdoor sofa might be a better choice based on your backyard landscaping. Include one or more ottomans for the perfect place to set a drink during a party or prop your feet when all the guests have gone for the night.
Dinner is Served
Some staycation parties may revolve around a full dinner, rather than just appetizers. This is when you will need a larger dining table and chairs to accommodate your guests.
This Island Estate Lanai dining set from Tommy Bahama Outdoor furniture looks right at home in a backyard oasis filled with palm trees and tropical vegetation. You will love waking up and enjoying coffee and breakfast at this table, then setting the scene for an evening soiree centered around fantastic food.
Add a buffet/console table for storing serving pieces and linens to keep things neat and tidy when not in use, but handy for staycation parties.
Why not stay home this year and enjoy a staycation party with your friends and family? Sprucing up your backyard oasis with Tommy Bahama Outdoor furniture makes it easy to kick back, relax and enjoy a party in the comfort of your own home.
This summer, there is no need to leave town in order to enjoy a resort-style vacation. You can relax in high style at home with just a few minor adjustments to your luxury outdoor living area. In this article, we provide tips for turning your backyard into a resort-style space that invites you to stay home and take it easy, featuring upscale Brown Jordan furniture.
Enjoy the View
The number one way to transform your backyard into a resort is to take full advantage of the gorgeous view. For many of us in the San Diego area, that means a sweeping expanse of serene blue ocean waves, such as pictured here. Although the Elements Woven sectional sofa is portrayed facing the camera, by turning it around to face the ocean, it provides a comfortable way to enjoy the ocean view in this homeowner’s backyard oasis. The table, as well as the end of the right section, are crafted specifically as the perfect place for a drink, a plate or an electronic device.
Even if your backyard view does not include the big blue, you can still take advantage of its best features by including a seating arrangement of Brown Jordan furniture situated where you can best enjoy the scenery.
Bring the Indoors Out
Here’s another cue taken from a high-end resort: create a living room outdoors with Brown Jordan furniture. The idea is to carve out a space where you can be just as comfortable doing all the things you enjoy indoors, out, including watching TV, reading a magazine or scrolling through social media.
The above image shows this concept beautifully. The Connexion sectional sofa, with its loose cushions, invites you to sink into its comfortable depths, sheltered from the hot sun by the shade of the patio cover. The versatile ottoman provides a great place to steady a tray of drinks and/or food. The Brown Jordan side table easily holds entertainment options, such as books and a Bluetooth speaker. The vase of fresh flowers really makes it apparent that this homeowner embraces the idea of bringing the indoors out.
Create Lovely Walkways
As depicted in the photo above, an arrangement of greenery and flowering plants creates a calm and soothing outdoor retreat. It doesn’t have to be a large area, just enough to feature several different kinds of foliage. A leisurely stroll through beautifully landscaped areas such as this is just the ticket for at-home relaxation.
Once again, Brown Jordan furniture takes this concept to a new level. By adding a single, low-slung chair and ottoman, you are instantly invited to sit down and relax while taking in the beauty of your surroundings. The wide, leather straps of this Kantan Brass by Brown Jordan duo envelop your body in comfort while the perfectly proportioned ottoman invites you to slip off your shoes and let your feet take advantage of a cool ocean breeze.
This year, consider a staycation in your own resort, style backyard oasis, thanks to Brown Jordan furniture and these arrangement tips.
